BOYS & GIRLS 4-8TH GRADE
OPPORTUNITIES FOR 1,000+ KIDS SINCE 2012

We have provided opportunities for over 1,000 youth, that have attended over 28 different schools in Minneapolis to develop their basketball skills and learn what is required to be part of a team.

DEVELOP SKILLS PROMOTE TEAMWORK HAVE FUN

Our programs are organized to develop skills, promote teamwork & have fun playing the game of basketball. We provide skill appropriate experiences for boys and girls, and is governed by a volunteer board that provides direction and oversight for the organization’s activities.

ANNUALLY: 250 FAMILIES AT TRYOUTS 22 TEAMS 51 COACHES

Year after year we see our numbers increase — players who want to get on a team, parents who generously volunteer their time to coach. And teams. Organized, sufficient, quality skilled kids who bond, support each other and demonstrate the best sportsmanship in the city.

TROPHIES ACCOLADES COMPETE SPORTSMANSHIP

We win a lot of games and we make a lot of friends. That’s important to us because if we’re not having fun competing & trying our best then why are we doing this? For us it’s about the kids. Not about the coaches. And with kids it’s crucial to teach them how to be great citizens & that is why we do this - sports allow us to win (and be proud), lose (to learn) AND make friends along the way.

OUR UNIFORMS GET NOTICED

We continue to hear how nice our uniforms are. They’re distinct and capture the history & legacy that the original Minneapolis team started back in the early 1940s. They are unique to us & make us feel proud everytime we step on the floor to compete.

Website: MONTHLY USERS: 710 SESSION DURATION: 03:25

Our website is the source of truth for our organization. It’s the destination that those that are interested come to learn more, research & find key dates and instructions. It houses our mission, celebrates our successes and helps our teams manage their seasons.

Networks

Our social channels are world-class & highly active. Why? That’s where our members are. Tracking their players, checking in on teams, learning about upcoming events...witnessing the passion & fun of Mpls Lakers basketball and it’s community of players and families.

The Minneapolis Youth Basketball Association, MPLS Lakers, was started in 2012 as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.  We were established to provide traveling basketball opportunities for boys and girls who live in and/or attend school in Minneapolis.

Our program provides winter traveling basketball opportunities for boys & girls in grades 4th through 8th to play organized community based travel basketball and to compete with similar programs in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs through Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS).

In our first year, we had three teams participate. Today the program has grown to seventeen (17) teams in the 2017-2018 season.

Players that have graduated out of our program, have gone on to play at the high school level & beyond.  We have kids participating in their high school programs within the Minneapolis area.

During the 2014-15 we introduced the "Little Lakers" a 4th grade travel program for boys & girls in Minneapolis.  The 4th grade program was a success, with 36 kids participating in a reduced tournament travel schedule.  This program was such a success that we incorporated 4th graders into our full size program!

This year has been our largest yet! 250+ kids have tried out representing 30 schools in the city of Minneapolis.

While we are not affiliated with the Mpls Public Schools or Mpls Park and Recreation Board we collaborate as much as possible through clinics and events.

Despite being told that developing a sustainable youth traveling basketball program would be impossible in Minneapolis, we are are active, we are growing and we are successful.  As Walt Disney often said when it comes to creating opportunities for kids, “it is kind of fun doing the impossible.”

Go Lakers!
