Welcome to the 2020-2021 season!
We are very excited for basketball season to start and to offer a safe opportunity for players who are going into 4th through 8th grade (boys and girls) that go to a school in Minneapolis or are residents in Minneapolis to play competitive basketball. We aim to provide an opportunity for players in our program to be physically active, develop their basketball skills, and form a foundation for loving the game for a lifetime.
We are proceeding with our plans for the season under the guidelines of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). Should their guidance regarding youth sports change, we also will change and adapt.
This season will be unlike any other and we recognize participating in this season during a pandemic is a very personal decision. The Mpls Lakers are putting safety at the forefront of everything we are doing. Throughout the season, players and families in the program will have an increased responsibility this year to follow our safety protocols. Please review our COVID Preparedness Plan before registering your child.
We are also modifying our team formation process this season. Any player that is interested in participating in the 2020-21 season with the Mpls Lakers, must complete this Season Enrollment Registration including an enrollment fee of $25 that will be applied toward the full season registration fees if your player is offered a spot on one of our teams. In some scenarios, players may need to attend a small group evaluation session (outdoors) during the team formation process. These evaluation sessions are scheduled for September 26th and 27th and families will be notified at least 7 days in advance if a player needs to attend. See the tryout page for more information.
We are unable to guarantee placement on a team for all players that enroll in the program and will fully refund the enrollment fee for any player that is not offered a spot or if we are unable to field a team due to facilities or other limitations.
Season Enrollment is open until 7pm on Friday September 11th, 2020.
This season will require flexibility and will incorporate changes to reflect the environment we are in. In addition to following our COVID preparedness plan, from the start we know that:
We expect to field fewer teams this year than last. In the current circumstances, we know some families will be unable to participate this year and many of our typical practice facilities are not available. This reduced access to facilities is our #1 constraint. If you have ideas how we could gain access to more facilities, please send your ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org
We will require more flexibility from families regarding practice time, duration, and location. Our coaches and facilities team will be creative to make sure players in the program have the opportunity to grow and develop. This may mean more practice sites outside the city limits, varied practice times, some remote team meetings and shorter practices.
The season registration will cost more than in years past because both our tournament fees and our facilities costs are increasing. Because attendance at tournaments will be significantly limited, tournaments have increased their fees, often by 30%. Our full registration fee this year is $695 (less the $25 enrollment fee) and will be due in three installments: $270 at season registration, $200 on December 1, 2020 and $200 on February 1, 2021.
With the cost structure in mind and a focus on keeping our program accessible to families, we are reducing our included tournaments to 8 to include the State Tournament (last year it was 10). The goal is for each team to play about two tournaments a month starting in November and ending with the State tournament. For safety reasons, ideally tournaments will be spaced out by two weeks
With a focus on player safety, we are enhancing our team formation process by using an open enrollment process combined with limited, small group evaluation sessions outdoors, where needed. For more information on the process, please see the tryout page.
Registrants can request a need based scholarship. Please complete this Scholarship Application to initiate the process.
Finally, we ask that you consider volunteering as a coach during registration. Each year, 80% of our coaches are parent volunteers and with COVID-19, we expect this percentage to increase. Please consider how you might be able to help the organization and our players have a great experience. If you have not previously coached with the Mpls Lakers, please also complete our Volunteer Coaching Application.
